Directions for Using
Dr. Naylor® DeHorning Paste

Read this sheet completely before dehorning any animal.

WHEN TO DEHORN

Dr. Naylor Dehorning Paste is best used on calves up to eight (8) weeks of age.  It is most easily used on very young calves.  The younger the calf is when treated, the better.  Shock and pain are negligible and dehorning is quickly and easily done.  Dehorning Paste may be used in most areas at any time of the year; there is no cutting, no bleeding, no fly problems!

HOW TO DEHORN

ALL ANIMALS: Be careful to apply a thin, even coating of Dehorning Paste, and only as directed.  Remove hair over horn button (bud) with shears or clippers in order to see that application is in the right place and in direct contact with the skin.  To contain the paste, apply a ring of Dr. Naylor® Udder Balm or petroleum jelly beyond the Paste application area.  If treated calves are confined in pens, tie them away from other animals to prevent rubbing paste on one another.  Do not allow treated animals to nurse. Keep animals out of rain after Dehorning Paste has been applied.

YOUNG CALVES: As soon as horn button (bud) can be felt, remove hair over horn button and adjacent area with shears or clippers.  On animals under one (1) week old apply a thin even film of Dehorning Paste over horn button and on a small ring of adjacent skin (horn growth epithelium) about the size of a five-cent coin (20 mm). On animals over seven days old apply Paste to a larger spot, the size of a quarter (25mm).  Use a wood applicator and apply paste once only.

OLDER CALVES: To dehorn calves six to eight weeks old whose horn buttons have started to grow, remove hair and use a small scraper or file to roughen a ring of skin about 3/8 inches (10mm) wide around the base of the horn button. Do not draw blood.  Apply a thin even film of Paste over the horn button and the roughened ring around the base of the horn button.  Apply once only.

LAMBS, KID GOATS: Apply Dehorning Paste as soon as possible after birth if animal is in good physical condition.  Minimum discomfort is experienced and application is facilitated.  Application of the Paste on lambs and kids over two weeks old is generally too late to prevent future horn growth as horns are too large, especially in males. Buck kids (males) usually have palpable horn buttons (buds) at birth.  Kid does (females) are a little slower in developing horns.  Clip the hair over and around horn buttons.  Apply a thin even film of Dehorning Paste over horn buttons and a narrow ring of skin at the base of the horn button.  This ring of skin grows the horn.  Too thick an application may result in deeper penetration and activity with discomfort.  Dehorn dairy bucks at 3 to 4 days, dairy goes at 4 days and always before 10 days.  Pygmy bucks should be dehorned at 7 days, pygmy does at 7 to 10 days.  Twenty to thirty minutes after Paste application scrape off Paste and neutralize treated area by flooding with water, then vinegar.  Wash water and vinegar must not come in contact with animal’s eyes.  Kids and lambs may be wrapped in a blanket for a short period to prevent rubbing treated area with their hooves.

WARNING

For external veterinary use only.  This product is a form of caustic.  Apply only with a wood applicator and as directed.  Do not ingest.  Avoid eye and skin contact.  Use gloves to protect hands.  Keep bottle tightly capped and in a safe place.
