PerioGard' Chlorhexidine Gluconate Oral Rinse USP is a near neutral solution used for antimicrobial activity during oral rinsing. The active ingredient is chlorhexidine gluconate with a concentration of 0.12%, and it contains water, propylene glycol, glycerin, sorbitol, polyoxyl 40 hydrogenated castor oil, flavor, cetylpyridinium chloride, and FDAC blue no. 1. The clinical significance of chlorhexidine gluconate oral rinse's antimicrobial activity in oral hygiene is significant, reducing bacterial counts of certain assayed bacteria in plaque by 54-97% after six months' use. Microbiological sampling has not shown any significant changes in bacterial resistance, overgrowth of potentially opportunistic organisms, or other adverse changes in the oral microbial ecosystem. Approximately 30% of the active ingredient is retained in the oral cavity following rinsing. Studies conducted on human subjects and animals have demonstrated excretion of chlorhexidine gluconate through the gastrointestinal tract, and the mean plasma level of chlorhexidine gluconate reached a peak of 0.20 ug/g 30 minutes after ingestion.*
