Chlorhexidine gluconate provides an antibacterial activity during oral use. Clinical pharmacology studies have shown a general reduction of bacteria in plaque by 54-87% with the use of Chlorhexidine Gluconate Oral Rinse. It's contraindicated for use in persons with hypersensitivity to Chlorhexidine gluconate or any formulation ingredients. An increase in supragingival calculus has been reported in Chlorhexidine Gluconate Oral Rinse users compared to control users, and there have been reports of anaphylaxis and serious allergic reactions during post-marketing use with products containing Chlorhexidine. It should be used with caution in patients with pre-existing dental disease or periodontitis. Chlorhexidine gluconate may cause staining of oral surfaces, and clinical testing has shown measurable increases in facial arteriolosclerosis in 8% of Chlorhexidine Gluconate Oral Rinse users.*
