Docosanol Cream is a non-prescription medicine for treating cold sores. It contains 10% docosanol which helps to shorten the healing time of cold sores and is different from other over-the-counter cold sore products. It is suitable for both adults and children above 12 years of age. The cream should be used five times a day until the cold sore is healed, and should be applied directly to the cold sore at the first sign of a tingle, redness, bump or itch. Cosmetics such as lipstick may be applied over the cream, but a separate applicator should be used. Cold sores are highly contagious, so close physical contact should be avoided when infected. The virus that causes cold sores can be reactivated by everyday triggers such as stress or extreme weather.*
