MucinexDM is an extended-release bi-layer tablet containing 600 mg of guaifenesin and 30 mg of dextromethorphan HBr. It is an expectorant and cough suppressant drug that works by thinning and loosening mucus to help clear airways and temporarily relieve cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritations caused by the common cold or inhaled irritants. It also helps reduce the intensity of coughing and promotes sleep. The drug is not recommended for children under 12 years of age and should be used with caution by people taking prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), drugs for depression, psychiatric or emotional conditions, or Parkinson's disease, or for two weeks after stopping an MAOI drug. It should not be used for chronic cough due to smoking, asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema, or for cough accompanied by too much phlegm.
