Docosanol Cream is an over-the-counter non-prescription cold sore medicine containing 10% active ingredient Docosanol Cream. Docosanol Cream is different from other over-the-counter cold sore products in that it helps to shorten the healing time of cold sores and the duration of symptoms, including tingling, patching, and burning. Docosanol Cream is safe to be used by adults and children over 12 years of age, and the medication should be applied five times a day directly to the cold sore at the first sign of a tingle, redness, bump or itch for best results. Cosmetics such as lipstick may be applied over it, and it is recommended that a separate applicator like a cotton swab be used to apply cosmetics over an unhealed cold sore to avoid spreading the infection.*
