Boxed Warning (Boxed Warning)

Boxed Warning (Boxed Warning)
This is a boxed warning about the risk of cardiac arrest from hyperkalemic rhabdomyolysis associated with the administration of succinylcholine to apparently healthy pediatric patients with undiagnosed skeletal muscle myopathy, most frequently Duchenne's muscular dystrophy. This can cause peaked T-waves and sudden cardiac arrest, especially in males aged 8 years or younger. Immediate treatment for hyperkalemia should be instituted, including administration of intravenous calcium, bicarbonate, and glucose with insulin and hyperventilation. Routine resuscitative measures are likely to be unsuccessful due to the abrupt onset of this syndrome. It is recommended that the use of succinylcholine in pediatric patients should be reserved for emergency intubation or instances where immediate securing of the airway is necessary. This drug should only be used by individuals familiar with its actions, characteristics, and hazards.*
