Allopurinol is a medication that blocks the production of uric acid in the body. It is converted into a compound called oxipurinol. The chemical formula of allopurinol is dibydro-4Hpyrazolo-H-pyrazalo (3,4-0) yrimidin-d-one, while oxipurinol can be represented as pyrimidine, 4.6 (SH,7H)-dione. Allopurinol works by inhibiting the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which is responsible for the conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine and ultimately to uric acid. By reducing the amount of uric acid in the body, allopurinol helps to prevent gout and kidney stones.*
