SAGE Chlorhexidine Gluconate Oral Rinse is a near-neutral solution designed for use between dental visits as part of a professional program for the treatment of gingivitis, characterized by redness and swelling of the gums, including gingival bleeding upon probing. It contains 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate, which has antimicrobial activity during oral rinsing. The clinical significance of the antimicrobial activities is not clear. The most common side effect associated with the rinse is an increase in staining of teeth and other oral surfaces, an increase in calculus formation, and an alteration in taste perception. Chlorhexidine Gluconate Oral Rinse has not been tested among patients with acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG).*
