OXYGEN, REFRIGERATED LIQUID USP UN 1073. Oxygen container contents in liters should always be kept in an upright position. Smoking in the presence of oxygen is prohibited as it can cause a fire. Combustibles in contact with liquid oxygen may explode on ignition or impact. Severe frostbite can be caused by direct contact with skin, clothing or eyes by liquid oxygen, thus container usage should be characterized by keeping oil, grease, and combustibles away. To avoid further hazardous incidents, the suitable equipment cleaned for oxygen service should be used. Liquid withdrawal from the container requires hands to be covered with gloves and wearing a face shield. Pressure reducing equipment and apparatus that are oxygen friendly should be used to avoid mishap.
