It affects the conversion of hypoxanthine and xanthine to uric acid, which is why it is used in the treatment of gout and kidney stones. The compound has a purin-5(1H)-one 3,7-dihydro-1H-purine-7,9-dihydro-1H-purine-2,6-dione, 2,6,8 (3H)-trione structure.*
