The Fentanyl Transdermal System is a medication for delivering 12 mg/h of fentanyl in vivo over 72 hours. The system must be removed before undergoing any MR procedure since it can cause burns, and it is important not to use it for mild pain or post-operative pain unless you have been using other narcotic opioids. Each system contains 1.38 mg of fentanyl and has isopropyl myristate, octyldodecanol, polybutene, and polyisobutene adhesive as inactive ingredients. To use it, the system must be applied immediately after removal from the blister and after removal of the protective liner. It should not be exposed to heat and should be stored in an unopened blister at up to 25°C (77°F), with excursions permitted to 15-30°C (59-86°F). If the seal on the blister is broken, do not use it, and keep it out of children's reach. The Fentanyl Transdermal System has a Medication Guide for important safety information and is manufactured by Apotex Corp., Weston, FL 33326.*

This text is describing three layers that may be present in a drug delivery system or patch. The first layer is a "Release Liner", which is typically present to protect any adhesive layer during storage and handling, and is removed prior to use. The second layer is a "Drug-Containing Layer," which would contain the active ingredients of the drug, and could be designed to release the drug at a controlled rate over time. Finally, there is a "Backing Layer," which serves as the structural support for the entire system, and may also protect the user from any irritation or discomfort resulting from the drug delivery system.*
