Allopurinol-fig1 (Allopurinol Fig1)
Allopurinol is a medication that is metabolized into oxipurinol. Both compounds are pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine derivatives and act as inhibitors of xanthine oxidase, which is an enzyme in purine metabolism. The inhibition of this enzyme decreases uric acid production and helps prevent gout attacks. Hypoxanthine, xanthine, and uric acid are all intermediate metabolites in purine metabolism.*
