Excedrin Extra Strength is a pain relief medication containing acetaminophen, aspirin (an NSAID), and caffeine. It is intended for temporary relief of minor aches and pains, including headache, toothache, menstrual cramps, and arthritis. Reye's syndrome is a rare but serious potential side effect in children and teenagers who have or are recovering from chicken pox or flu-like symptoms. Excedrin Extra Strength may cause skin reactions, and allergic reactions, including hives, facial swelling, and asthma. There is also a risk of liver damage and stomach bleeding. Excedrin Extra Strength should not be used by individuals with liver disease, stomach problems, high blood pressure, heart disease, liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, asthma, or by pregnant or breastfeeding mothers. The recommended dose for adults and children 12 years and older is two caplets every six hours, with no more than eight caplets in 24 hours. Children under 12 should not use the medication without a doctor's recommendation. The product should be stored at room temperature and kept out of reach of children.
