Zegerid OTC is a medication that works differently from other over-the-counter heartburn products. It stops acid production at the source, targeting the acid pump that produces stomach acid. This medication is to be used once a day for 14 days. It is important to manage heartburn by avoiding lying flat or bending over after eating, eating slowly and in smaller portions, avoiding late-night eating, losing weight if overweight, avoiding certain trigger foods such as rich, spicy, fatty, and fried foods, chocolate, caffeine, and smoking. It is also recommended to elevate the head of the bed and wear loose-fitting clothing around the stomach. The active ingredients in Zegerid OTC are Omeprazole 20mg (acid reducer) and Sodium Bicarbonate 1100mg (allows absorption of the Omeprazole product). This medication is intended for the treatment of frequent heartburn, occurring two or more days a week. It is not intended for immediate relief and may take 1 to 4 days for full effect. If you are allergic to Omeprazole or experience severe skin reactions, stop using the medication and seek medical help. Do not use if you have difficulty or pain swallowing food, vomiting with blood, black or bloody stool, heartburn with lightheadedness, sweating, or dizziness, chest pain or shoulder pain with shortness of breath, sweating, and pain spreading to arms. A 14-day course of treatment may take 1 to 4 days for full effect.*
