Drug Interactions (Drug Interactions)
This text provides information on drug interactions that can either augment or antagonize the pressor effect of ephedrine. Oxytocin, clonidine, propofol, MAOIs, atropine, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors are drugs that augment the pressor effect of ephedrine. Guanethidine, B-adrenergic receptor antagonists, reserpine, quinidine, mephentermine, and theophylline are drugs that antagonize the pressor effect of ephedrine. The text also provides clinical impacts and interventions for each interaction. Additionally, it cautions that ephedrine may inhibit the neuron blockage produced by guanethidine resulting in loss of antihypertensive effectiveness. Moreover, concomitant use of ephedrine may increase the frequency of nausea, nervousness, and insomnia. Additionally, the text highlights the potential for ephedrine to decrease the efficacy of epidural blockade by hastening the regression of sensory analgesia.*
